MALARPLASTY USING THE TRIPOD OSTEOTOMY THROUGH THE INTRAORAL APPROACH

Abstract
The prominent malar region is classically a sign of beauty in the Western culture, but in the Orient, it is considered an unaesthetic facial feature and thus patient¢¥s wanting reduction of the malar region is not uncommon. In the majority of cases experienced, prominence of the zygomatic arch rather than the zygoma body was found. Thus the commonly used procedure of zygoma shaving for reduction was inadequate.
The authors have experienced three cases of reduction malarplasty using a method of tripod osteotomy through the oral cavity with followup duration ranging from two months to three years. The results obtained were aesthetically satisfactory.
Reduction malarplasty using the tripod osteotomy through the oral cavity method has the following advantages ;
(1) scar is camouflaged by intraoral approach
(2) procedure is relatively simple
(3) prominent malar region, especially the zygomatic arch can be adequately reduced (4) natural contour is maintained
